How we choose

We buy from twelve workshops. That number is deliberate and it has not grown in four years, because it is roughly how many places one buyer can visit twice a year and still know what is happening in each of them.

"If it cannot go in the dishwasher, we ask why. Usually there is no good answer."

Everything here is tested the boring way: in our own kitchens, for a season, before it goes on the site. Glazes that craze, linen that pills, handles that loosen — we would rather find those than have you find them. About a third of what we sample never makes it.

We publish the workshop behind every piece and what it is made of, down to the clay body and the wood species. If something breaks, write to us: most of it can be repaired, and for the ceramics we will put you in touch with the person who threw it.
